Translation: Kosovo is Serbia. So, isn’t that actually a Serbia t-shirt? And why isn’t he swimming for the American team? Born in California, trains in Florida?
A Serb swimmer was suspended Friday for the remainder of the European swimming championships for wearing a T-shirt proclaiming “Kosovo is Serbia” at a medal presentation ceremony. ..the European (50 butterfly) record holder…who was born in Anaheim, Calif., to Serb parents and trains in Florida, said Thursday he was just trying to send “positive energy” to the country he represents.
Unverified accounts of the event added: “The political nature of the decision to exclude Cavic was underlined by the hapless Dutch organizers ‘accidentally’ losing the Serb flag and raising the defunct Serbia-Montenegro flag during the podium ceremony.”
Update: The New York Times blog linked to this Creeping Sharia story in ‘Cavic Is Serbia’- and we’re honored!

November 23, 2008 at 9:57 PM
There’s a world outside America. And not just A world, but THE world!
America isn´t the center of everything, as many of american´s think. It´s a part. Think outside the box….He was born in the USA, he lives there and he trains there, so what?
Oh, I know. Everybody who was born in and above the USA is American.
I understand.
But his native country is Serbia; that makes him have a dual citizenship.
Which makes him in turn a Serb!
Above all, he express himelf as Serb, so what you think he is?

If a Mexican-American athlete (born and raised in the US) competing for Mexico wore a “California is Mexico” t-shirt, the authorities would do nothing.

Exactly right, William of OC, exactly right!

At first…
His parents are Serbian, he was born in America, decided to compete for Serbia, because he feels like a Serb.
What gipsy, what Yugoslavia, what the f*ck are you talking about?
Go beg on the Austrian and German streets and better think how will you feed your 40-membr family.
KOSOVO is all shqiptar as much as HIMALAYAS.
CAVIC deserves nothing less then BIG RESPECT.
January 10, 2009 at 5:48 PM
Okay albanians are morons americans even bigger…If Serbs are scared to fight for Kosovo then explain 1999 we came in whooped your little terrorist organization and you hide behind NATO and USA to talk shit thats cowardness! But lets get one thing straight Cavic is Serbian and nothing else! For example i was born and i live in Bosnia/Republic of Srpska so that doesnt make me an Bosnian. Same here his parents came to USA and decided to have a child and he was born in USA which doesnt make him an american in any other way then being an american citizen!

Unfortunately, it seems that most of you guys missed the point. This article was not about Cavic’s ethnicity or nationality or whether or not he should represent America or Serbia in events; it was about the shirt and the message that it delivers which got him disqualified. William of OC made pointed out to us “…If a Mexican-American athlete (born and raised in the US) competing for Mexico wore a “California is Mexico” or more appropriately (America is Mexico) t-shirt, the authorities would do nothing.” Which is arguably up for debate, but yes – less inflammatory and probably would not lead to a dismissal from competition. Why? Because, America (California) and Mexico have not waged bloody war on each other people due to ethnic backgrounds. Kosovo je Srbija! is a harrowing message. You’ve all heard the song. This can never be accepted in a free world, it’s exclusive of another group that has human rights. Pride for one’s country is one thing, to exclude others because of it another all together. I don’t think Anyone would be happy if the slogan “America je Kosovo” was being exposed here.
In my hometown, Bosnian and Serbs who have settle here sense the war have been locked in a battle with each other as well as Albanians who were already settled in this area. They have assimilated into local gangs with other ethnicities and continue to carry out the blood feud with each other. A 13 year old Serb was killed in a shooting last year while riding his bike, a gun found on his waistline as he lay bleeding in the street.
As evidenced by the many of your post, this subject is a hot topic that rouses the deepest, darkest emotions from some of the brightest people and for that reason is not appropriate to be displayed during any international competition. To represent Serbia today before the world is to represent all it’s people, not just a few.
Please don’t continue the ignorant ways of those before you… The youth is the truth and the future for all nations. Kosovo + Srbija = Peace.
ED.
(This was actually a Dutch competition, not American)

Parka – you raise some good points as to why he may have been wearing the t-shirt in protest or to raise awareness.
You do however ignore a significant factor in the situation and that is Islamic jihad. According to Islam there will be no peace until all the lands are Islamic which is why they want their own Muslim country and are willing to kill non-Muslims to get it.
Better analogies would involve other countries/territories won by Muslims in bloody jihads.
KOSOVO: NON-SERB MINORITIES FLEEING COUNTRY
(Cavic actually IS an American, which was a secondary point in our post)

This is all nonsense. He has every right to swim for any country he wants. But, he’s still an american, however you look at it. He benefitted from being an American. He probably would never be in that position was he not an american. So, him denying that part of himself is a little dumb on his part. Maybe he should go train in Serbia.
I have nothing against Serbia or Kosovo. I just think this whole argument is childish and stupid.

I think Milorad Cavic had the right to peacefully express his opinion, right or wrong, in the name of freedom of expression.
Shame on the people who punished him for that.
History books say Kosovo has belonged to Serbia for long, as they say Istria and Dalmazia once belonged to Venezia. I’ve personally known people born in Fiume when it still was Italy. They were 100% Italians. Now Croatians call it Rijeka, not to tell how many Italians were killed or expelled from there after world war II.
Has Italy the right to claim Istria and Damazia back?
I’m afraid it hasn’t, as Mexico hasn’t for Texas or California.
Have I the right to show a t-shirt reading “l’Istria e la Dalmazia sono Italia” without being punished?
Sure yes.
