Police officers have been banned from asking for people’s Christian names in case they offend those with different religious beliefs.
Under strict new ‘diversity guidelines’ officers have also been told to refrain from using phrases such as ‘Evening all,’ ‘my dear’ or ‘love’ for fear it may cause offence.
The guidelines, revealed through Freedom of Information laws, warn police not to use slang, to be wary of using a handshake to greet people and to avoid being in the same room as a woman.
The do and do not ‘diversity rules’ have been issued to Kent Police to promote ‘clearer communication’ and ‘break down barriers with diverse communities’
Officers are told to ask people for a ‘first and last name’ or ‘personal and family name’ instead of referring to their Christian name.
The guidelines also tells officers to be aware that in some households they should offer to take their shoes off as some religions frown on shoes being worn inside the home.
‘You’ll be told whether it’s necessary or not and won’t inadvertently cause offence,’ the guidebook states.
‘Do not underestimate how your own cultural background may affect your perception and behaviour towards others.’
One veteran officer, who had been in the force for 15 years, said the new guidelines were taking things too far.
‘Most of us are fully aware of how to treat people from different cultural backgrounds, but being told we can’t even ask what their Christian name is just plain ridiculous.
‘That is what we are brought up with – Christian name and surname – and to be honest if you had an officer ask for your personal name and family name it’s just going to confuse people.
‘It’s just the latest in a long line of annoying PC-related nonsense that we keep getting shoved down our throats.’
