WASHINGTON (RNS) Religious freedom advocates are urging members of the United Nations to vote against the latest proposal from Islamic countries to combat “defamation of religions.”
For the last decade, the Organization of Islamic Conference has successfully sponsored similar resolutions as a way to address religious persecution. But U.S. religious liberty activists increasingly say the resolutions actually do more harm than good.
“The OIC-sponsored U.N. resolutions on this issue instead provide justification for governments to restrict religious freedom and free expression,” the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom said in a policy statement.
The draft OIC resolution calls defamation of religions “a serious affront to human dignity, leading to the illicit restriction of the freedom of religion of their adherents and incitement to religious hatred and violence.”
The resolutions express the sentiments of the U.N. General Assembly but do not require specific action by member states. A committee vote is expected this month, followed by consideration and action by the General Assembly in December.
USCIRF, an independent and bipartisan commission, said support for the proposal is on the decline; last March, it squeaked past the U.N. Human Rights Council by just four votes.
“I am pleased to say that our efforts are paying off and more countries are voting against the ‘defamations of religions’ resolution each year,” said Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., in a recent statement. He sent a letter signed by dozens of members of Congress to more than 150 heads of state urging them to oppose the latest resolution.
The OIC’s blasphemy proposal is part of a wider initiative of its 57 member states to counter what they consider “systemic defamation of Islam.” An OIC news release said OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu “underscored the dangerous consequences of the growing trend of Islamophobia on global peace and security.”
No mention of the threat of jihad to spread Islam and sharia law to global peace and security.

It can’t be done at the UN because we are greatly outvoted. The World Court is our only recourse. Three International Human Rights Covenants contain provisions which would, if enforced, require that Islam be proscribed by law.
The International Qur’an Petition is designed to expose Islam’s violation of those covenants and demand enforcement of the covenants.
G.A. resolutions can’t be enforced. H.R. Covenants can. That is why they are inserting the res. into ICERD through a binding protocol. The Ad Hoc Cmte. meets at the end of this month to work on the protocol. Few know about it and nobody does anything about it.

Islam defames MY god and MY religion just by its existence. So, who can I complain to? A “defamation of Islam” resolution is also defamatory to MY religion, which values free speech as a divine right.

Even moderate Islamic countries have long pressed the worldview that despite the fact that the world’s energy supply has come from the Middle East for sixty years, that it is America that is the reason for abject poverty in most of the Middle East
In either case, the Koran mandates violence against us in many suras; those suras are no more open to interpretation than are any other part of the Koran, as the Koran is the exact word of God to Muslims. Interpretation is not only impossible; it is blasphemous to Muslims.
The violent Islamic radicals have been very clear that their goal is to bring about a world-dominating Caliphate and convert the world to Islam and Sharia Law by force. This isn’t an accusation, but something they admit to and are proud of.

In Mina, Saudi Arabia, hundreds of Shias have travelled from Britain to perform the hajj. Among them is Mohammed al-Hilli, who says he has “been called a heretic and a nonbeliever” and thinks some of the attitudes stem from Saudi preachers advocating hostility towards Shia Muslims.
He said there have been many incidents where the religious police, the mutaween, have victimised Shias, and said they had disrupted the group’s prayer meetings in the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He said that on past visits to Medina, home to Mohammed’s grave and another important destination for pilgrims, he had been spat on. “It is very sad that Muslims should treat each other this way.”
Shia Muslims believe Muhammad’s family and certain individuals among his descendants, known as imams, have spiritual and political authority over the community. They also hold that Ali, Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, was the first of these leaders and therefore Muhammad’s rightful successor. Questions of leadership and different religious practices are the main sources of friction between the two denominations.
Al-Hilli said he had not encountered outright hostility or prejudice in Mecca, but was alarmed about the situation in Medina, which is home to the graves of four out of 12 Shia imams.
In the past, some Shia Muslims have felt unable to visit the graves of the imams, saying the mutaween stood guard to discourage them. Last year the government cordoned off the area entirely. Now it is open twice a day – to men only.
Al-Hilli said: “Women feel disadvantaged. It is very sad and brings tears to my eyes. No other place on earth has the graves of so many revered individuals from our tradition. I do not feel I can go there comfortably, there is always tension, pressure and harassment.”
Many Shia, when performing prayers during the hajj, will follow Sunni practices rather than their own, which include a different call to prayer, a different form of ablution, and combining prayers, worshipping three times a day instead of five.

I am aware of this move in UN, but what happened later on, I did not follow it. It is a catch twentytwo situation. Having said and done, since this UN resolution, there has been lot of water flown over our head.
The tussle between the Muslim world among themselves as well as with the western nations is a worrying thing. I hope that it doesn’t escalate into a widespead war.
