Dhimmitude in the West. On May 8, The Washington Post ran a hate-filled attack on the Catholic Church, the same ad that ran in the NY Times. But unlike the New York Times, the Washington Post ran the anti-Catholic ad with no changes; the Times made the atheists “soften” the headline.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation ran the ad in the New York Times urging people that it’s time to quit the Catholic Church. The NYT changed the headline to take away a bit of the edge (“It’s time to consider quitting the Catholic Church.”) The Washington Post ran the ad without any editorial changes made to it.
I submitted the same ad, but flipped the language, inserting Islam instead of the church. The Washington Post demanded numerous copy changes.
The Washington Post legal department reviewed the ad you supplied for clearance and there are a few they are requesting…
1) They need substantiation on some of the claims in the ad. Please see all the areas highlighted in orange in the attached file. They are asking for copies of the sources.
2) Some of the statements are harsh and can be subject to reader interpretation so they are asking that softer words be used instead (see areas highlighted in blue). For example one of the paragraphs repeats the word “hatred”…they are asking for this to be changed to “hostility towards Jews, women, non-Muslims and gays. In another paragraph the writer uses the word “dehumanizes”…They are suggesting using the word “demeans” instead.
3) At the bottom of the ad there are two words highlighted with both colors – they are asking for substantiation on these claims and/or using other words that are less harsh.
Once the client has made the changes and supplied all the substantiations legal will reconsider this for ad placement.
Did the Washington Post make the atheists edit their vile language? They asked me for substantiation of some of the assertions made in my ad, and I submitted the citations/footnotes they requested:

The publisher of The Washington Post has decided not to run the ad. We have concluded that the ad is a criticism of the Islamic religion as a whole rather than a commentary on a specific policy or actions of the institution or of an individual.

The full-page advertisement that ran in The Washington Post on May 8 from the Freedom from Religion Foundation, an atheist group, called on “liberal and nominal” Catholics to leave the Church “en Mass” because Catholic bishops — “an avowedly antidemocratic Old Boys Club” — had launched “a ruthless political Inquisition” against the contraception mandate. Many Catholics saw much of the ad as hate speech and anti-Catholic rhetoric.
Same ad, same content, different result. This is sharia enforcement of the blasphemy laws under Islam.
