Texas: Somali Muslim “refugee” with terror links pleads guilty

Why immigration remains one of, if not the top threat to America. via Somali with suspected terrorism ties pleads guilty – San Antonio Express-News.

A Somali man with suspected terrorism ties pleaded guilty Wednesday to lying to an immigration judge in a failed bid to get asylum, and to FBI agents investigating his links to terrorist groups.

Abdullah Omar Fidse surprised prosecutors Wednesday when his lawyer announced he wanted to plead guilty to two charges of making false statements.

His hearing before Chief U.S. District Judge Fred Biery initially was meant to take up a motion to dismiss an indictment that could have left him facing more than 30 years in prison. With his guilty plea, he now faces up to 10 years.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Roomberg told the judge the government is prepared to offer evidence in four other counts against Fidse, including obstruction of justice, which Fidse is trying to convince Biery to dismiss.

Fidse and Deka Abdalla Sheikh were detained at the Hidalgo port of entry in January 2008. Neither had identification, but both claimed persecution in their home country and sought asylum.

Sheikh eventually got it, was granted temporary permanent residence and has been living in Madison, Wis.

She should have been deported too since she pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in the terror investigation in September.

Fidse was held as federal authorities investigated him, and he remains jailed after the couple were indicted in May 2011.

At a hearing in September, Sheikh pleaded guilty to conspiracy to make false statements, admitting Fidse “coached” her on how to respond to immigration officials’ questions during his immigration court hearings.

The two rehearsed their responses, which they knew to be false, via phone. They even created hand signals to secretly communicate with each other during court testimony.

Following their rehearsed lines, the defendants each told authorities Fidse fled Mogadishu, Somalia in 2008 after his father was killed by Islamist militants and that they had first met in Ethiopia.

But the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force says Fidse’s father was not killed by al-Qaida or any of its Somali franchises and that Fidse and Sheikh, who had known each other since childhood, eventually married and lived together for three years.

Fidse was living in Nairobi, Kenya, not Somalia, at the time he claimed his father was killed, officials said. And, Fidse’s father died of natural causes.

At a hearing last year, FBI special agent Mark Wagoner testified Fidse was secretly recorded saying he had been a cook for Osama bin Laden, and that he was “in tears” after a U.S. airstrike in Somalia in 2008 killed Aden Ayro, head of the extreme Islamic group al-Shabaab.

Fidse “spoke about jihad, ” Wagoner said. “He also recited the Koran … phrases like ‘Gather your horses and weapons and terrorize the infidels.’”

Court records also said an undercover source taped Fidse in 2009 claiming he bought a $100,000 armed battle vehicle that later was destroyed during fighting. Prosecutors and court documents have not specified who was involved in the fighting using the vehicle or where it took place.

The feds have yet to fully publicly explain Fidse’s alleged terrorism links — several pleadings remain sealed — as they have released details necessary only to prove that he lied to immigration court and the FBI.

Someone should fully explain why they haven’t been deported yet. More from a previous report:

The January 2009 call from an immigration detention center in Pearsall relayed a disturbing tip: A fellow inmate was swearing allegiance to terrorist groups.

Within days, FBI agents in San Antonio had wired a tipster and later an undercover source, both of whom recorded Abdullah Omar Fidse, a Somali caught crossing the border illegally in the Rio Grande Valley, allegedly saying more troubling things.

Fidse, 22, spoke about a plot to assassinate the U.S. ambassador to Kenya, FBI special agent Mark Wagoner testified Thursday at a bail hearing in San Antonio for Fidse and a Somali woman, Deka Abdalla Sheikh.

Wagoner said Fidse also mentioned he had been a cook for Osama bin Laden, and that he was “in tears” after a U.S. airstrike in Somalia in 2008 killed Aden Ayro, head of the extreme Islamic group al-Shabaab.

The indictment against them here.

  1. Okay..help me get this straight. A muslum civillian pleads guilty and is sentanced for a plot of terrorism, yet our faux government cannot prosecute a known killer for a crime on a military base because he is crying over having to shave???? This place is screwed

    • small nuance but he:

“pleaded guilty Wednesday to lying to an immigration judge in a failed bid to get asylum, and to FBI agents investigating his links to terrorist groups”

note he was caught in Jan 2009 so this took nearly 4 years as well

      • Understood…however The fort hood deal is for all purposes a “slam dunk” the guy was witnessed by not only the peole he wounded, but by others as well. I understand due process and stuff like that…but the law also states “a right to a speedy trial” the defendant cannot be able to dictate whether he wants a speedy or slow trial. This has all the markings of another sweep under the rug situation. This man will see time, no doubt, but I bet it won’t be the death penalty…I can almost see this ending up him going to an institution. Or better yet why don’t we let Our dictator in chief and his minions (e.holder et.al) deport him back to his homeland so he can try again

        • There is a precedent for his receiving life in prison w/o parole. The case I refer to is the one of the army sergeant who ‘fragged’ his fellow soldiers some years ago. I was reminded of this by a military person I know at the V.A. hospital near me.

    • tim mcvey was dispached & sent on his way to devine justice…& rightly so. the “mad maggot major” deserves no better.

  2. ok I really dont like the idea that a confirmed muslim with terror links is living in Madison WI, that is too close to my home, and my family. They would fit into the left wing in Madison. Thanks for the update.

  3. And our borders continue to be open like a sieve…a sieve that Bush wouldn’t close, either.

  4. He claimed persecution in their home country and sought asylum.
Who was Somali man persecuting? Lying? Someone post something where one actually tells the truth. We know when they lie. Their mouth moves. Thats islam in a nutshell. By the way, who got his cab?

    • Your comment about the cab made me smile. I needed to smile right about that time. The bottom line is that whether these people were malevolent or not, the world, and (because of our open borders and flawed immigration policies) our country, are full of these types of people who are capable of much terror.
