The Aceh Post newspaper is reporting that a senior sharia law enforcer called Zulkarnain, was admitted to hospital after crashing into a tree.

A police officer who arrived at the scene told the paper that he found marijuana in the car.

The head narcotics detective in the area says Zulkarnain’s urine later tested positive for the drug, which is strictly forbidden under sharia law.

There are also reports that Zulkarnain denied the drug use.

For days a violent campaign has been mounting against the Christian minority. An excuse used by the local leadership to distract citizens from problems, including justice and the fight against corruption. The work of the bishop of Padang for dialogue and “good relations” with the Muslims. A church may close due to the alleged lack of a building permit.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – In the district of West Pasaman, the Indonesian province of West Sumatra, characterized by a strong presence of Islamic extremists, some local groups – supported by government leaders – have launched a violent anti-Christian campaign. And as in the days of the Suharto regime (1967-1998), the government is feeding the ethnic and confessional divisions, in order to distract the public from the real problems of the people, including justice and rights, development policies and a serious and effective fight against corruption. Meanwhile, the bishop of Padang, worried by the growing “Christianophobia”, is trying to mediate by maintaining “good relations” with the various groups and citizens’ representatives, including the moderate Muslim wing.

The wave of “Christianophobia” in the third largest island in the Indonesian archipelago has taken on concerning contours in recent days, with the increase in protests in public squares. On November 19, a mob marched through the streets of the West Pasaman District to protest against “the growing presence” of “Catholic and Protestant schools” in the region. Leading the procession were members and leaders of Islamic extremist groups, chanting slogans and shouting at schools, churches and stores owned by the religious minority.

Among the many signs that stood out in the crowd, one reminded citizens that it is “morally obligatory for Muslim families not to send their children to school in Christian or Catholic institutions.” Another poster invoked the closure “of Christian cafés and stores.” And the real fear is that the campaign of hatred and ostracism could take on even darker, more violent contours.

Among the protesters’ targets was also the Catholic Church of Sumber Karya, in West Pasaman, which is why local leaders have preferred to cancel the work of expansion and renovation, to avoid new tensions. Among the reasons for the attack on the building is the alleged lack of a building permit – the infamous Izin Mendirikan Bangunan (IMB) – a pretext often used to halt Christian works, centers and places of worship in Indonesia. A priest from the area told AsiaNews that all the procedures have been followed for obtaining a permit, but the authorities are resisting.

After Aceh, the only province in which Shariah law is in effect, the province of West Sumatra has the second-highest percentage of Muslims in the population and has many affinities with the first, including practices and regulations inspired by Islam and the Qur’an. It, too, is the scene of attacks against political leaders close to the minorities, as happened last year against the Catholic leader Supri, accused of “Christianizing” the zone. In addition to throwing rocks and stones at his house, the extremists repeatedly threatened him, ordering him to convert and embrace the faith of Mohammed. His dry response: “I’ll never change religion,” said Supri.

JAKARTA (AFP) – About 100 Islamic extremists on Tuesday praised the 9/11 hijackers at a rally outside the US embassy in Jakarta, as they celebrated the 11th anniversary of the deadly attacks.

Demonstrators carried posters and banners, one declaring “We are all Osama” under a picture of the late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, as dozens of policemen stood guard before the embassy.

Other banners read, “It is time for Islamic revolution”, and “Democracy brings oppression”.

“They (the hijackers) sacrificed their lives to defend fellow Muslims in Palestine,” Muhammad Fachry, spokesman of the Sharia for Indonesia group, which organised the rally, told AFP.

“What they did was a reminder to the American government to stop oppression against Muslims and support for the Israeli government,” he said.

Son Hadi from the Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid, which has been labelled a terrorist group by the United States and sent supporters to take part in the rally, told AFP: “What the hijackers did was the start of the Muslim war against Western hegemony.”

Fachry said it was the first time his group, which was founded in 2010, had commemorated the attacks.

He referred to the hijackers as “the magnificent 19″, and praised their “bravery”.

“American arrogance collapsed together with the World Trade Centre’s Twin Towers,” the organisers said in a statement.

The arrogance, or ignorance, or hubris of elected officials has not collapsed. It’s grown. Like Muslims everywhere in the world, they want sharia.

Muslims throw urine, sewage on Christian worshipers

The Congregation of Batak Protestant Churches (HKBP) Filadelfia branch was forced to halt its service to commemorate the ascension of Jesus at their house of worship in Tambun, Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday after a group of people harassed them.

HKBP Filadelfia’s Rev. Palti Panjaitan said that the group of people blocked access to the church building at 8:30 a.m. when the congregation was about to enter and start the service.

“We [the congregation and the people] were only separated by a barricade of policemen who managed to protect us even though the intolerant people were trying so hard to break through the barricade,” Palti told The Jakarta Post.

“They threw urine, sewage and frogs at us — all of which also struck the policemen,” he added.

The group of people, who according to Palti did not carry any flags or symbols that would identify them, also yelled at the churchgoers using a loudspeaker, Palti said.

He said that the parishioners managed to pray for only about five minutes and were not able to conduct other liturgies.

“We tried to negotiate with all parties, including that group and representatives from the local administration. We were told to abandon the service,” he said, “We finally gave in at 10 a.m.”

Palti said that the church representatives were considering filing a police report concerning the incident.

“We want the mastermind arrested,” he said.

The church has been involved in a building permit dispute with local residents for years. Palti said that the church had already obtained the necessary legal paperwork, claiming that the Bekasi administration’s decision to close the church in 2010 was overturned by the Bandung State Administrative Court in West Java in 2011.

Pop diva Lady Gaga on Sunday cancelled her Indonesian concert with promoters saying the security threat was too serious after Islamic hardliners promised “chaos” if she entered the Muslim nation.

Earlier this month Jakarta police refused approval for the show after the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) threatened violence if Lady Gaga performed, calling her a “devil’s messenger” who wears only a “bra and panties”.

“Nowhere else in Indonesia can accommodate that many people”, he said, insisting that the 26-year-old singer was “prepared to adapt to Asian culture”.

“Lady Gaga fans, stop complaining. Repent and stop worshipping the devil. Do you want your lives taken away by God as infidels?”

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Lady Gaga will have to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following protests by Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers, who said her sexy clothes and dance moves will corrupt young people.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar, responding to the pressure, said Tuesday that the permit for her June 3 “Born This Way Ball” concert had been denied.

Indonesia, a nation of 240 million people, has more Muslims than any other. Although it is secular and has a long history of religious tolerance, a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

Hard-liners have loudly criticized Lady Gaga, saying the suggestive nature of her show threatened to undermine the country’s moral fiber. Some threatened to use physical force to prevent her from stepping off the plane.

Lawmakers and religious leaders, too, have spoken out against her.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Mariska Renata, who had tickets to the Jakarta show.

She said by bowing to the wishes of “troublemakers,” authorities only give them more power. “We are mature enough to be able to separate our own moral values from arts and culture,” Renata said.

Pop superstar Lady Gaga’s upcoming Jakarta concert should be canceled the Jakarta Police said on Sunday, citing a flurry of objections from Indonesia’s Islamic organizations ranging from issues with the US pop star’s provocative outfits to allegations of devil worship.

Lady Gaga’s sold-out Jakarta concert is scheduled for June 3, but police have yet to decide whether Indonesia’s 40,000 ticket-holders will be able to see Lady Gaga perform. The planned concert has attracted the ire of hard-line Islamists the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), who called Lady Gaga to the devil during rallies and warned that her concert will degrade the nation’s sense of morality.

The Jakarta Police recommended that the concert be canceled. But, in the end, the decision is out of their hands.

“The concert permit is issued by the National Police,” Jakarta Police spokesman Rikwanto said, “but the Jakarta Police doesn’t recommend the concert be held.”

The National Police are still undecided whether to allow Lady Gaga to perform in Jakarta.

“We’re still discussing it,” National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told Beritasatu.com. “The concert is slated for June, so we haven’t made a decision. We’ll announce whether or not we’ll issue a permit later.”

The Muslim Defenders Team urged the police to cancel the concert to prevent possible conflicts between Islamists and Lady Gaga fans.

“We ask the National Police to take into consideration the public’s opposition to Lady Gaga’s concert,” said M. Mahendradatta, board chairman for the Muslim Defenders Team — an organization known for representing hard-line Islamists and alleged terrorists.

JAKARTA: An Indonesian court on Wednesday jailed an Islamic boarding school head for 17 years for preaching on jihad that led to terrorism and possessing more than two dozen home-made bombs and inciting terrorism.

Abrory M. Ali, who was the head of the Umar bin Khatab boarding school in West Nusa Tenggara province, eastern Indonesia, was arrested in July when some of his home-made bombs went off accidentally, killing a school employee, according to China’s Xinhua news agency citing local press reports.

Following the blast, police tried to raid the school but students attempted to stop them in a bid to prevent the discovery of the explosives and firearms.

This prompted a three-day standoff during which the students, armed with machetes and swords, barricaded themselves inside.

“The defendant’s deeds caused many people to suffer from injuries and he tainted the good reputation of Indonesia which has promoted the eradication of terrorism,” presiding judge Iman Gultom read in the verdict on Wednesday.

Indonesia: Bank robbery to fund jihad was halal, suspect says

One of the suspects of an armed robbery of a Bank CIMB Niaga branch in Medan in which a police officer was killed said on Monday that the act was halal, or clean according to Islam.

Pamriyanto, also known as Suryo Saputro, said he had acted with several others to carry out the armed robbery in August last year because it was halal.

“I was on the wanted list so there was no way I could look for a job. I think [the robbery] was halal because I needed it,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Pamriyanto was testifying as a witness in the trial of Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, the leader of the Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid Islamic group, who is charged with raising money to run a militant terrorist training camp in Aceh.

Pamriyanto said he had been given a Rp 10 million (US$1,150) cut for his role in the robbery, but said he did not know the total amount that the group had stolen from the bank.

He also said that he had trained at the militant camp in Aceh, adding that this was part of his jihad.

A deadly heist at a CIMB Niaga bank branch in Medan last year was carried out to fund jihad, a suspected militant told the court on Monday at the trial of controversial cleric Abu Bakar Bashir.

“The money was intended for Jihad Fisabilillah,” or struggling in the name of Allah, said Beben Khairul Banin, who is being tried separately for the Aug. 18 robbery that left one police officer dead.

“We will fight against anything considered an affront to Islam,” he told the South Jakarta District Court.

Banks are among the targets “because they seek interest, which is against Islamic law,” he said.
