ST. LOUIS A prominent figure in the Nation of Islam religious group admitted Thursday in federal court in St. Louis that he committed mail fraud using multiple Social Security numbers and names to apply for bank loans.
Officials said Akbar Muhammad hid debts from lenders who lost more than $323,000 in their dealings with him. There was no connection alleged to his work with the religious group.
Muhammad, 66, of the St. Louis area, agreed to plead guilty after negotiating with federal prosecutors for nearly two years, said his attorney, Scott Rosenblum.
The felony conviction carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000. Muhammad more likely faces up to a sentence of 24 months, which is recommended under federal sentencing guidelines, officials said. He is scheduled for sentencing July 2.
