The Islamic Center at NYU is hosting its 2010 conference titled, Building Momentum in Mainstream Culture (co-sponsored by Islamic Relief).
The top two confirmed speakers are Siraj Wahhaj and Zaid Shakir. A little background:
> unindicted co-conspirator to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing
> testified as a character witness for convicted terror mastermind Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman
> states Islam commands jihad of the true soldiers of Allah – listen to a Wahhaj speech
> has stated:
“…And [Allah] declared ‘Whoever is at war with my friends, I declare war on them.’ … Your true friend is Allah, the messenger, and those who believe…. Hear what I’m telling you well. The Americans are not your friends … The Canadians are not your friends … The Europeans are not your friends. Your friend is Allah, the Messenger and those who believe. These people will never be satisfied with you until you follow their religion …”
> In a 1992 address to an audience of Muslims in New Jersey, Wahhaj expressed his desire to see Muslims seize control of the United States and replace its constitutional government with an Islamic caliphate. “If we were united and strong,” Wahhaj said, “we’d elect our own emir [leader] and give allegiance to him…. [T]ake my word, if 6-8 million Muslims unite in America, the country will come to us.” (source)
Radical Islamic cleric Zaid Shakir, a frequent guest speaker at CAIR events, tells his Muslim audiences: “Jihad is physically fighting the enemies of Islam to protect and advance the religion of Islam. This is jihad.”
Acceptable targets of jihad, he says, include U.S. military aircraft.
“Islam doesn’t permit us to hijack airplanes filled with civilian people,” Shakir once told a Muslim audience. However, “If you hijack an airplane filled with the 82nd Airborne, that’s something else.”
The 82nd Airborne Division’s elite paratroopers fly out of Fort Bragg, N.C., which is part of North Carolina state Sen. Larry Shaw’s district. Shaw is CAIR’s new chairman.
The Executive Director of the ICNYU, Khalid Latif – who invited and or approved these two pro-jihad, anti-American speakers – is also the NYPD’s Muslim chaplain, and on CAIR-NY’s Board of Directors. His sister is also a CAIR-NY member.
Khalid Latif is Executive Director and Chaplain (Imam) for the Islamic Center at New York University (NYU).
Latif is no fan of the American values of freedom of speech or freedom of expression, and had no problem infering jihad would be waged if NYU displayed the now infamous Mohammad cartoons. Militant Islam Monitor previously reported on Khalid Latif’s veiled threats of violence in a letter to NYU’s President if he were to allow a student organization to display Danish cartoons of Muhammad:
I am writing to you in regards to an event that is scheduled to take place next Wednesday at New York University. This event is being sponsored by the Objectivist Club, an OSA club, and its purpose is to analyze the issue of free speech with an emphasis put on a series of cartoons recently published in a Danish newspaper that depicted the Prophet Muhammad , peace be upon him, and Islam in a highly offensive manner. These cartoons have lead to riots, protests, beatings, and even deaths on an international level and now the idea is being discussed whether or not they should be displayed at NYU at the aforementioned event…As such, I am asking you to not allow these cartoons to be displayed in any shape or form. The event itself and the topic that the students would like to discuss is not problematic in any way, but the pictures themselves are just hatred and there is really no justification in preaching something that breeds that kind of hate. One of the images shows what the author claims to be a rendering of the Prophet Muhammad wearing a turban that is shaped like a bomb, making it seem as if Islam is a religion that can be equated to terrorism. If ideas like that are not enough to keep these images from being displayed, the potential of what might happen after they are shown is something else that should be considered and not taken lightly.
As Chaplain for the Muslim community at NYU, my primary concern would be for those undergrads, grad students, faculty, staff, and admins who are Muslim and what kind of state displaying these cartoons would leave them in…
Aside from that, the repercussions that would take place outside of the university setting are potentially huge. All over the world Muslims have been coming together over this issue and in New York they would not hesitate in doing the same thing. New York itself is also one of the most metropolitan cities in the world and media attention that would be acquired would not limit itself to the city, but could go across the nation and even around the world as it already has with issues pertaining to these cartoons. NYU has facilities all over the world and Muslims also live all over the world…
NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg shocked most NY’ers when he invited Siraj Wahhaj to a meeting in the aftermath of the Ft. Hood jihadi massacre. Bloomberg shook hands with the 1993 WTC unindicted co-conspirator and defended his meeting before expressing regret when he found out who Wahhaj was.
9/11 has opened doors beyond belief for Muslims. Standards are low. Even at the NYPD and mayor’s office.
