Study: Homosexual behavior unusually common among Pashtun men

An update of sorts to our post on the bacha bazi, or dancing boys, of Afghanistan. Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

In one instance, a group of local male interpreters had contracted gonorrhea anally but refused to believe they could have contracted it sexually — “because they were not homosexuals.”

Apparently, according to the report, Pashtun men interpret the Islamic prohibition on homosexuality to mean they cannot “love” another man — but that doesn’t mean they can’t use men for “sexual gratification.”

The group of interpreters who had contracted gonorrhea joked in the camp that they actually got the disease by “mixing green and black tea.” But since they refused to heed the medics’ warnings, many of them re-contracted the disease after receiving treatment.

The U.S. army medic also told members of the research unit that she and her colleagues had to explain to a local man how to get his wife pregnant.

The report said: “When it was explained to him what was necessary, he reacted with disgust and asked, ‘How could one feel desire to be with a woman, who God has made unclean, when one could be with a man, who is clean? Surely this must be wrong.'”

The report also detailed a disturbing practice in which older “men of status” keep young boys on hand for sexual relationships. One of the country’s favorite sayings, the report said, is “women are for children, boys are for pleasure.”

The report concluded that the widespread homosexual behavior stems from several factors, including the “severe segregation” of women in the society and the “prohibitive” cost of marriage.

Though U.S. troops are commonly taught in training for Afghanistan that the “effeminate characteristics” of Pashtun men are “normal” and not an indicator of homosexuality, the report said U.S. forces should not “dismiss” the unique version of homosexuality that is actually practiced in the region “out of desire to avoid western discomfort.”

Otherwise, the report said, Westerners could “risk failing to comprehend an essential social force underlying Pashtun culture.

The Taliban are primarily Pashtun, and now we have a better understanding of the Pashtun interpretation of homosexuality in Islam.

  1. When I visited Morocco in the 1970’s, all the men went around hand in hand with boys. Boys would come up to my friend, who was male and offer to sell themselves to him. He was always being molested – touched up – in the street or market.

Of course it is due to the complete segregation from women. Islam is a cult of the abnormal in every sense. There is no choice in islam: you are forced against your will.

why is it that we are the ones always required to “understand and learn” ? It’ s not our burden to learn perversity of thier culture. And no all cultures are NOT equal- F**king little boys and refusing to admit they are pedofile homosexuals is SICK

    • and McChrystal said sometimes the answer is sharia law… that gives you an idea of where the “leadership” is vis a vis Afghanistan (much like Iraq where we instituted a sharia-adhering constitution…now there’s some diversity/democracy)

  3. Need anyone really be surprised?

Mahound was supposedly a bisexual. Its recorded that he sucked on the tongues of other men.

  4. It is a given. Pashtuns marry off their girls as soon as she begins menstruation, and 8 out of10 die at childbirth.
Also, culturally, girl children are always fed less, little or no medical treatment for ailments, and infant mortality of female babies is very high.
High incidences of kidnapping girls because there’s simply not enough females to go round.

  5. Seriously people?
Afghan people do respect women and before you go off attacking Afghans just look at everyone around the world. Everyone is like that and it has been like that for a very long time. im not saying its right but its not right taht people are going off and attcking one certain race for something that the whole is to blame for. Before anyone speaks just get your damn facts straight. Ignorance is nothing but a shame. @ juniper, really? wow. Islam is a choice and its nothing against anyone’s will beacuse if it was then it would not be the second largest religion in the world and the fastest growing one. This is why America is like this, because we have ignorante people like you giuys here.

  6. @ dm60462. Afghanistan has very low AIDS patients. One more thing you dont get AIDS from being gay! OMG i feel stupid just being on this website beacuse there is so much ignorance here. Its actually very sad. But i guess someone needs to be here and set your guys asses straight. People like you guys piss the crap out of me.

  7. So what u r saying is a bunch of homos are the only group of people on earth to hold US forces at bay for over 8 years, and have not been conquered since Alexander the greal rolled through and taught them how to enjoy male/male sex? What’s the next argument, there is no way it can be in their dna even though they have been doing it for thousands of years? I guess calling them a bunch of fags won’t weaken them, I guess if the USA wants the rights to their natural resources they will have to accept this fact about them, and if the Talaban can’t allow them to be open about it they will be more happy going back to their pre war life. They need to be free like every one else on earth.

  9. Isn’t that what alot of Pakistanis are too ( PASHTUN ) ? Are the Pakistani Pashtuns also into this homosexual stuff just like the Afghan Pashtun ?

If sharia law continues spreading, you'll have less and less freedom of speech - so speak while you can!
