CHICAGO (CBS) – Congressman Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) said Tuesday that the recent arrest of a Muslim teenager from Hillside for allegedly plotting to detonate a car bomb outside a downtown bar proves his point about radical Islam is a real threat that exists in the Chicago suburbs.
WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports 18-year-old Adel Daoud is accused of trying to set off what he thought was a car bomb outside a downtown tavern on Friday.
Walsh said the alleged plot is just the kind of thing he’s been afraid of.
“It is a threat. I sit on the Homeland Security Committee. We’ve held four hearings in two years on the threat of homegrown terrorism,” Walsh said.
Last month, the 8th District Republican said at a town hall meeting that “there is a radical strain of Islam in this country – it’s not just over there – trying to kill Americans every week. It is a real threat, and it is a threat that is much more at home now than it was after 9/11.”

The congressman went on to claim that radical Islam had found its way into the Chicago suburbs, including parts of his district.
Those comments drew criticism from Democrat Tammy Duckworth, who is running against Walsh. She said Walsh’s comments proved “why he is not fit to hold political office.”
In light of Daoud’s arrest, Walsh said he feels vindicated.
“I’ve been very disappointed in Tammy Duckworth, because she sort of wants to score political points, and said that the fact that … I brought this issue up is reckless. I hope now that she’s been reminded that this is a serious threat,” he said. “We know this is going on in towns big and small throughout the country. And here we’ve got a young man who belonged to worship at a mosque in Villa Park; in, you know, the 8th District.”
An elected official in Australia is also vindicated: A Rude Awakening
The dreadful protests by Islamic fundamentalists in Sydney on the weekend were the portend of what I have been consistently warning my colleagues and the Australian population about for a number of years. These warnings have earned me a great deal of criticism from fellow politicians and some members of the media. However, they have been well received by a grateful public who have been struggling with the cultural relativism being practised by too many of our opinion makers.
I have desperately hoped that my fears about the impact of Islamists in our country would never be realised. For the rest of my life, I would gladly have worn the slurs of ‘racist’ and ‘bigot’ received in response to my concerns about Islam if it allowed Australia to avoid the problems that extremists have caused overseas.
What occurred in Western Europe a decade ago is now happening here. Even the signs held aloft during the Sydney riots carried the same suggestion as those from protests in the UK – “behead those who insult Islam”. It should serve as a wake-up call to the naïve and just plain foolish who are in denial that a significant problem is emerging in Australia.
It emerges wherever Muslims are present, including the U.S.
To appease a tiny minority, many Australians now unknowingly consume Halal slaughtered livestock. The government have considered changing laws to accommodate sharia compliant finance and others have joined calls for sharia to be applied for matrimonial disputes. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
When are our political and community leaders going to wake up to the fact that what is going on here is exactly the same process that has caused such chaos in some comparable nations?
There can be no tolerance of the fundamentalists’ objectives in this country. Whether it be segregated swimming hours, dehumanising facial coverings or demands for sharia law, every indulgence further emboldens those who seek to radically change our way of life.
