Seattle elementary school bans Halloween costumes, fears offending students from “other cultures”

via Jihad Watch, where Robert Spencer writes:

Gee, I wonder which culture would have students in the Seattle elementary schools who would be offended by Halloween costumes. Still, there is no indication that any Islamic supremacist group demanded this ban; the school officials are just playing the dhimmi on their own initiative. Please write them, politely and respectfully, and ask them why American culture always takes a back seat to others, and why they’re pandering to an imaginary offense:

“Seattle Elementary School Bans Halloween Costumes,” from CBS Seattle:

SEATTLE (CBS SEATTLE) – A Seattle school has banned students from celebrating a new holiday this year: Halloween.Lafayette Elementary School has decided to not allow students to dress up in costume for Halloween this year. And there is still some discrepancy between parents and the administration as to why the ban has been implemented this fall.

The decision was first reported by the district (Seattle Public Schools) as being a preventative measure in the event that Halloween costumes could offend and upset students who come from other cultures. Dozens of parents complained to the school over the measure demanding a detailed explanation.

Lafayette’s principal, Shauna Heath, e-mailed media outlets, including The West Seattle Blog, arguing the decision was made because of the limited instructional time that falls on Halloween this year. Seattle Public Schools observe a half-day of instruction on Wednesday, October 31.

“This decision was made by the entire staff after two deep and detailed discussions. The initial conversation was initiated by staff members who suggested that since Halloween falls this year on a half day of school, we not allow costumes. It takes students a while to change into their costumes, and students are distracted taking away from the already limited instructional time.

“The Lafayette Staff met again on Monday, revisiting and recommitting to their decision of no costumes so that we can focus on academics during the limited time we have available. The staff has committed to continuing the conversation throughout the year before deciding on what we will do in the future about Halloween celebrations.”

“I was just really sad and I had to fight back tears,” fourth-grader Leilani Nitkey told KCPQ-TV.

CBS affiliate KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reports the school announced it will be hosting a “Harvest Party” in lieu of a costume party.

One parent told The Seattle Time that earlier in the week a school vice principal told him the costumes were banned because observing Halloween might be offensive to some students, but the school said that wasn’t the case.

Some parents say that although Halloween has its roots as a religious observance, it’s now a secular holiday that shouldn’t be considered offensive….

  1. Why can’t Islamists just ‘suck it up’, or ‘tough it out’ or plain ‘get over it’? Our children have to give up tradition and part of their culture so these people don’t have ‘hurty feelers’? Just think of all the other ethniciities who are going to have negative reactions because your insane decision. What is wrong with you – you are giving away America while Islamists are forcing their culture on us? First it was the American flag T-shirts and Hispanics,…(but they could fly their flag). If you are so insensitive to your own, then leave the country, but do not cater to these people. They are nothing but trouble. When are you serving halal meals?

  2. Its not who you think. Its NOT the muslims, unless you come as mohammed. It is the left, the politically correct educators who are using this for their own sick twisted agenda. They are the ones to go see.

  3. another example of dhimmitude; when will folks wake up; if the islams cannot and will not assimilate; that is their problem; they can always leave our country. this is another example of their snakey tentacles trying to take away everything American; this has to stop; folks need to grow some balls and stand up to this idiocy. It is still a free country and islams need to get over it. They don’t mind using our freedoms against us while taking away traditions that have gone on forever here in America.

  4. One would think that Holloween would be the one American tradition that the musturds would embrace! “Wow, I can dress up as moo-ham-mud, drink camel piss, and go door to door, and the dhimmi’s give me candy with needles it”! How grate can this be?

  6. I received this email from my email to them:

I’m sorry you feel that way, especially considering that we ARE NOT banning “Halloween”. The fact is that we have said “no to COSTUMES this year due to the ½ day early dismissal.” This has been blown out of proportion and I resent your implications.

Subject: Banning Halloween to not offend “Other Cultures”

    Dear Administrators:

    Lafayette Elementary School,
    Seattle, WA:

    Shauna Heath, Principal
    Karmen Nordhougen, Assistant Principal
    Connie Wicklund, Administrative Secretary

I am appalled at the decision all of you have made in banning Halloween!

This is The United States of America and we have cultures in this country that are different than other countries…

Other countries have cultures that are different from ours…

When anyone decides to visit or live in another country, it is common practice for them to “get along with” the celebrated cultures of the country they are in; visitors do NOT have any right to expect the homeland, they are in, to change their cultures to satisfy visitors!

People who immigrate to a country and become citizens are expected to honor the country’s cultures and celebrations; else, ignore them if they don’t like them, but NOT raise a stink about them!

If anyone is offended with our cultures, THEY should move somewhere where they will not be offended! (or keep their mouths shut about it)

We should NOT interrupt our cultures & celebrations in order to please a newcomer to our country!

If they do not like it, that is THEIR problem… and we should not be expected to change our culture to satisfy THEM!

Your action in banning a fun Halloween celebration is uncalled for and is UNACCEPTABLE!

You owe your community an apology and the decision should be reversed!

You are a disgrace to our Nation!

    • My Reply…
      Dear Connie Wicklund,

OK, you banned Costumes because you thought they would OFFEND other cultures…

Anyone of an “Other Culture” must understand that it is part of OUR CULTURE , accept it, and not feel bad about it and DO NOT EXPECT US TO CHANGE OUR CULTURE TO PLEASE THEIR CULTURE!

Again, if students of “Other Cultures” think that they would really be OFFENDED by the costumes, they should feel free to STAY HOME and miss 1/2 day of school!

      I’m sorry if you’re offended… So am I!

BTW…. Read it for yourself… I am NOT the only one!

      Have fun,

      End of subject…

Perhaps we didn’t quite get it straight??!!

      • for brevity we said Halloween but clearly the links and title say Halloween Costumes… but really, without costumes what is Halloween to elementary school kids?????

        • She knows perfectly well what you’re saying, she’s throwing a diversion tactic. Keep her on track, pin her down. “Halloween costumes ARE Halloween to elementary school kids, along with the candy.

Kids look forward to this holiday all year. They get very excited and happy about what costumes they will wear, what they will be, and this woman and her school should be ashamed for ripping away our children’s culture from them.

These school officials are no different than the Christian missionaries who took the native american children, placed them in Christian schools, and ripped their culture away from them. All done just to please themselves, the Christian missionaries.

Our children’s culture is Halloween. These bad school “missionaries” have no right to take that away from our children. Costumes and candy ARE Halloween and Connie Wickland and the others at her school know this. Shame, shame, shame on them.

  7. Political correctness like this is damaging our country. We have our culture, our language, our customs, and our mores. Halloween is not offensive nor is it being used in a coercive fashion to anyone not wishing to participate. Enough is enough. It’s time to end the PC and the unreformed liberalism that is a plague on our nation.

  8. WHERE is the ACLU?!?!? Too many schools allow moslems to coerce the kids to ‘pray like a moslem’?! Or bring in their craprans, oh er I mean korans. And then they even take trips to the mosques. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?!?!?!?!?!

  9. There are probably Christians who don’t celebrate Halloween but I’m sure these aren’t the “other cultures” they were worried about offending. If someone doesn’t want to participate in a certain activity they can take their kids out for that day. I will give the school the benefit of the doubt and say that a half day of school doesn’t give much time for changing but an after school party could fix that. Also many churches have alternative activities they call “harvest parties”.

  10. The only way to get the attention of school administrators is to stage a “sick out.” They lose money when kids don’t show up. Have everyone take a week off and watch them panick.

If sharia law continues spreading, you'll have less and less freedom of speech - so speak while you can!
