The ass-covering can’t happen fast enough. via U.S. embracing new Syrian opposition group – The Washington Post.
The Obama administration is taking a calculated risk that embracing chosen leaders of Syria’s fragmented rebels will speed the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, moving this week to recognize a slate of opposition figures whose pledges of democracy Washington can do little to enforce.
The administration is expected to announce the recognition of a relatively new Syrian opposition group Wednesday when American, European and Arab diplomats meet with its leaders in Morocco.
The action is part of fast-moving diplomacy to try to guard against chaos and collapse in Syria if rebel forces succeed in ousting or killing Assad. International efforts to support moderates as successors to Assad have taken on new urgency as rebels gain ground militarily.
In a further attempt to bolster moderates and marginalize extremists in the opposition, the State Department plans to designate a leading Syrian militant group as a terrorist organization. The designation, to be announced Tuesday, identifies Jabhat al-Nusra as a global terrorist organization and an affiliate of the group al-Qaeda in Iraq.
The two steps are aimed at building a broader and more moderate coalition for a post-Assad Syria. But the Obama administration remains opposed to U.S. military intervention in Syria or providing arms directly to the rebels.
We know this is a lie because a) Clinton threatened intervention last week, and b) the NYT stated Obama secretly approved weapons transfer to the rebels, knew within weeks they were going to terrorist groups and worse – urged the emirates to ship weapons to Libya that could not be traced to the United States.
Notice of the designation was published Monday in the Federal Register. The notice indicated the paperwork was signed by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Nov. 20. In separate amendments under the Immigration Act and an existing executive order, the designation prohibits Americans from having any financial dealings with the group and freezes any of its assets under U.S. control.
This all fits too nicely into place – fund terrorists, allow Muslims in America to fund them, then ban one terrorist group – after the fact. Coincidence that the NYT ran a piece seemingly critical of the Obama administration specifically on the same group we know find out was banned on November 20?
Update: This could get uglier, faster: The Syrian rebels (again, funded and armed by Obama, funneled through Qatar and Saudi Arabia by CIA) are in full support of the now banned al Nusra:
A total of 29 opposition groups, including fighting “brigades” and civilian committees, have signed a petition calling for mass demonstrations in support of Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist group which the White House believes is an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
“The people are not going to accept intervention by the West now. You were watching us die, and now that we close to victory you want to intervene? You are not welcome.”
And who did the US back as the chosen rebel leaders?
Many are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood or even more radical Salafi movements, but are thought to be men with whom the West “can do business”.
