Federal prosecutors have charged the brother of Wayne County’s former chief development officer, Turkia Awada Mullin, with dealing prescription drugs from his Warren medical practice and with conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
Dr. Hussein (Sam) Awada, was released on $10,000 unsecured bond today after being arraigned on the charges in federal court, said Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office. Awada was required to surrender his passport and remain in southeast Michigan. He’s also prohibited from writing prescriptions.
Awada, who operates Midwest Family Practice on 12 Mile in Warren, could not be reached for comment; no one answered the phone at his office Wednesday.
He is charged in a compliant that includes a 40-page affidavit detailing the Drug Enforcement Administration’s investigation into his practice.
One of the unnamed informants appears to be a former employee.
At one point, Awada told the informant, “I know X-rays are a pain, but they are our moneymaker, what pays your check,” according to the affidavit.
The informant told investigators that in 2011, Awada was writing 240 scripts for the recruiter’s patients, and that the recruiter was paying Awada $50,000 a month.
The recruiter “normally paid Awada at his office. … Awada wanted the cash to be in all $100s,” according to the affidavit.
Investigators interviewed the recruiter Oct. 3, and the person described the relationship with Awada. The court filings do not name the recruiter.
Other informants, also unnamed in the court records, told investigators that Awada “kept significant amounts of cash” in his Royal Oak home. One informant described seeing “thousands” of dollars in the basement of Dr. Awada’s home while another described seeing over $1 million in cash at the home.
Two informants told investigators in August “that Awada had shipped furniture in a storage container filled with cash to Lebanon.”
