MONTREAL — A woman in her 30s is dead after her headscarf and hair became caught in a subway-station escalator.

A bystander found the woman lying at the base of the escalator at Fabre metro station in east-end Montreal around 9:15 a.m.

He alerted transit workers, who called police.

When first responders arrived, the woman was unresponsive.

“We tried to perform resuscitation on site, but we weren’t able to save her,” paramedic Bob Lamle told QMI Agency.

The exact circumstances of the woman’s death weren’t immediately clear, but Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said it appeared “her headscarf and her hair got stuck in the escalator.”

“Was she strangled by her scarf or was she the victim of an illness before falling? It’s too early to say,” Brabant added.

Witnesses told police they saw the unnamed victim struggling to free her scarf after it got lodged in the teeth of an escalator on her way down to the subway platform.

‘While she was trying to pull up her scarf from the escalator, her hair got caught too and from there, everything got tied up at the end of the escalators,’ said Constable Jean-Pierre Brabant, of the Montreal police.

Commuter Bassam Joubarani told CBC.ca he saw two Good Samaritans rushing to the aid of the 48-year-old woman, who was lying unconscious on her back at the bottom of the moving stairs.

Joubarani recalled seeing the trapped victim still breathing, with half of her body resting on the escalator.

If she wasn’t wearing the hijab it couldn’t have got stuck in the escalator. Or go kart.

Will her family be suing the government and escalator manufacturer? Did her husband make her wear the hijab? Inquiring minds want to know.

And just in time, World Misogyny Hijab Day is Coming February 1.

  1. You have absolutely no business whatsoever claiming that a Muslim headscarf was involved. The Toronto Sun story does not say that; it refers to a scarf — millions of non-Muslim women wear scarves. You invented the Muslim headscarf angle because you hate Muslims. David Pinto Montreal

    • Now that sounds like a plan! Just like the Stone Age “Paleostinians” did on 9-11. How about bashing a few candy-filled piñatas designed to resemble muhammad?

  2. I do not gloat over anyone dying in such hideous manner- All escalators and other machinery with moving parts are dangerous to people wearing flowy scarves and/or loose long hair- in USA there are signs saying this on every escalator.

It does PROVE that our factories and workplaces should NOT EVER accommodate Muslims wardrobe demands- these are UNSAFE in many situations.

In many countries women get burned UP in preventable accidents due to loose flowy clothing.

  3. We should not gloat over accidents like this.
After all, however much misguided, she was a human being.
Let’s get after the real stuff. the ideology behind all this.
