Tens of thousands of Muslims gathered in the parking lot of Angel Stadium on Monday morning for prayers marking the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.
The event was organized by the four largest mosques in Orange County – the Islamic Center of Irvine, the Islamic Society of Orange County in Garden Grove, and the Islamic Institute of Orange County and West Coast Islamic Society, both in Anaheim.
Organizers had expected about 15,000 people, but attendance far exceeded that number, they said. The prayers were held outdoors in a fenced-off area of the stadium’s parking lot.
“We had two services, and many people ended up praying outside the fence because there was no room,” said Nicole Bovey Alhakawati, spokeswoman for the Islamic Institute of Orange County.
The prayers and celebrations were marred by four protesters in the parking lot who carried signs disparaging the Prophet Muhammad, held up Bibles and yelled out to attendees.
Eid al-Adha is one of two major Islamic holidays. It celebrates the culmination of the annual pilgrimage, or hajj, which brings together millions of Muslims in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The holiday and pilgrimage are a commemoration of the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice in obedience to God.
On this day, Muslims sacrifice sheep as a symbol of Abraham’s surrender to God. They celebrate by performing morning prayer services, exchanging gifts, and visiting friends and family.
Alhakawati said protesters come every year to the event but were much louder and disruptive this year.
Khalil Hamidi, who was at the prayers with his family, including his 11-year-old niece, said the protesters were yelling obscenities in front of young children.
“They were yelling out hateful things and holding Bibles,” he said. “I have many close friends who are Christians. What these people did today was not Christian.”
There was some pushing and shoving between the protesters and the attendees, Hamidi said. The mosques organizing the prayers had rented the space for a private event, he said.
Anaheim police officers who responded to reports of the incident dispersed the crowds in an orderly manner and made no arrests, Sgt. Daron Wyatt said.
“There was some verbal bantering between the groups,” he said. “But it didn’t get physical or out of hand.”
The protesters were in the parking lot, which is open to the public, he said.
“Everyone needs to understand we have religious freedom and everyone is allowed to air their viewpoints,” he said. “It just needs to be done in a peaceful manner without violence.”
Translated: Muslims need to understand. But Muslim settlers in the United States don’t care about our kufr laws.
That said, for all the “tens of thousands” who attended including media, we couldn’t find any images or videos anywhere online with more the 10-20 people in them. We did find the video below that contradicts what DEEPA BHARATH and his/her photographer presented to readers.
Our Muslim neighbors chant the murderous rally cry, Allah Akbar as they attempt to take out Ruben Israel. The video ends with an angry Muslim telling his comrades, ” I am ashamed to be a Muslim.” He also called them cowards as they refused to carry out a attack on Ruben Israel.
Remember, Anaheim has now officially recognized the area as “Little Arabia.”
