BURLINGTON, Skagit County — Tips and surveillance video led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Oak Harbor man in connection with Friday’s deadly shooting at the Cascade Mall, authorities said Saturday night.
The suspect, identified as Arcan Cetin, was arrested Saturday evening as he walked along a street in Oak Harbor. Cetin will be turned over to the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, according to Island County authorities.
Cetin was identified as a suspect from tips and after police examined surveillance video from the Burlington mall and saw a car connected to him, Mount Vernon Police Department Lt. Chris Cammock said during a news conference late Saturday night. Skagit County authorities alerted the Island County Sheriff’s Office, which arrested Cetin around 6:30 p.m., he said.
Cammock said Cetin has not been charged. He will be booked into the Skagit County Jail, he said.
He is expected to appear in Skagit County District Court on Monday.
A man who answered the door at the home of Cetin’s parents declined to comment on Saturday.
Skagit County court records show Cetin has a criminal record that included three domestic-violence assault charges in both Burlington and Island County, with the victim identified as Cetin’s stepfather. He also was arrested for drunken driving.
Island County District Court records show that Cetin was told by a judge on Dec. 29 that he was not to possess a firearm.
More on the victims at the link above. It was reported elsewhere but unconfirmed, that one of the victims was Cetin’s ex-girlfriend and her grandmother. That can’t be true based on the profiles of the victims.
The identity of the youngest victim, Sarai Lara, 16 — a cancer survivor and high school sophomore — was confirmed by her mother. The other victims were Belinda Galde, 64, and her mother, 95-year-old Beatrice Dotson, and Shyla Martin, a 52-year-old Macy’s makeup counter employee. Chuck Eagan, a Boeing maintenance worker, was also shot while helping his wife flee the store. He was airlifted from the scene and died later at a hospital.
The shooter wasn’t Hispanic as was also reported widely by the media. Seattle PI confirms he is from Turkey, a rapidly Islamizing country:
Cetin, who immigrated to the U.S. from Turkey, is a legal permanent resident who has been living in Oak Harbor, authorities said. He had been arrested once before in the county for assault, Hawley said.
USA Today reports:
The man accused of fatally shooting five people at a mall in Burlington, Wash., was held without bond Sunday and faces five counts of first-degree murder, according to jail records.
The motive for the shooting that killed four women and a man remained unclear. Cetin’s ex-girlfriend used to work at the store but hasn’t in several months and lives in another county.
As the search for a motive continues, Homeland Security Chair: ‘Good Chance’ Mall Shooting is Islamic Terror.
McCaul: Well, I think there was a good chance it could be. I know right now law enforcement, FBI is playing it safe, saying there are no links to terrorism. That’s true at least from the evidence so far. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out more details about this individual, as well as we did Mr. [Ahmad Khan] Rahami.
The first evidence that he is a Muslim or comes from a Muslim family is presented by Freedom Daily:
Arcan Cetin’s Facebook page which shows he lists himself as originally coming from Turkey.
The shooter who killed 4 females and one male made reference to being a Hillary supporter Tweeting this out last year.
Cetin also follows the ultra-liberal TV show, “The Young Turks.”
Cetin’s Tumblr page (which is named “arcanmotherrussiavodkaak47”) contained a post with the word SubhanAllah which in Arabic means “Glory be to God.” Cetin asked his followers to “reblog” his post to see how many people would recite the phrase.
Arcan Cetin also posted a comment on a picture of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi that another Tumblr user had posted. The user who posted the picture goes by the name of “meowfraulein.” Strangely, Cetin’s picture is on the account. Cetin’s comment was, “My main dude, Abu Bakr al big daddy.” Now we know he supported terrorists.
Cetin’s mother (or grandmother) is seen in several pictures on Facebook wearing a traditional Muslim head scarf.
