Defense Secretary wants Muslim Brotherhood supporter for Pentagon’s top civilian job

So much for draining the swamp.

President Trump’s defense secretary wants the Pentagon’s top civilian job to go to a onetime prominent supporter of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, a group Trump may designate as a terrorist organization.

Not surprisingly, the White House is resisting the choice by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, a retired Marine Corps general, of Anne Patterson to be undersecretary of defense for policy — the Pentagon’s fourth most powerful position.

While Patterson’s bona fides are not in question – she has served as an ambassador to Egypt, Pakistan, Colombia, El Salvador and the United Nations, along with being President Obama’s assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs – there is widespread concern, both at home and abroad, about her close ties to ousted Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Patterson’s support of Morsi and his Islamist government – and her denunciation of the 2013 protests against the Egyptian leader as mere “street protests” – saw herself become the target of widespread criticism. Demonstrators plastered her face on signs and banners and made her the public face of the Obama administration’s policies in the North African nation.

“The biggest pushback [from the White House] is that she was ambassador to Egypt immediately before and after the Morsi presidency,” a person familiar with the conversations told Politico. For Mattis’ part, he has “put her name forward and he doesn’t quite understand why people have an objection,” the person said.

Her poor standing among the Egyptian public seems to have rubbed off on President Trump and others within the White House at a time when the president is considering declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

Trump himself was often critical of President Obama’s outreach to the Muslim Brotherhood, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has proposed a bill to call for declaring the Brotherhood a terror organization. In the past, it has been accused of supporting terrorist groups around the world, and several countries, including Muslim nations, have banned them.

The Brotherhood’s critics include prominent Muslim leaders in the U.S. and around the world, with prominent sheikhs of both Shia and Sunni Muslim groups accusing it of engaging in terrorism.

“President Trump must go ahead with his listing of the Brotherhood,” Sheikh Mohammed el Hajj Hassan, founder of the American-Muslim Alliance, told Fox News. “This group since its inception practiced killing, crimes and terror attacks in the Arab world. In Egypt, Syria, Tunisia and other countries their clerics call for violence.”

The Muslim Brotherhood was formed in Egypt in the 1920s with the stated goal of establishing a worldwide Islamic caliphate, or empire, ruled under Sharia law. Egypt declared it a terror group in 2013 after the government blamed it for a bombing of a police headquarters that killed 16, even though the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood denied involvement and condemned the attack.

The Defense Department isn’t the only government agency that has been battling with the White House over its picks – last month Secretary of State Rex Tillerson saw his top choice for deputy secretary of state denied by Trump – but Mattis appears to be the most adamant about staffing his department and has the least amount of qualms with battling it out with the White House.

The tug-of-war between Mattis and the White House has meant that not a single undersecretary or deputy secretary to the Defense Department has been nominated to a post. For his part Mattis’ deputy, Robert Work, is a holdover from the Obama administration and is only staying on until the secretary can get his own deputy nominated.

“Mattis is a guy who cares very much about personnel,” a friend close to Mattis said. “He doesn’t want people off the tracks that he has laid down and that he’s running his train on.”

The question is: Why Is General Mattis Nominating the ‘Muslim Brotherhood’s Stooge’?

Patterson — the “Brotherhood’s Stooge” as she was called by all, from news analysts to the Egyptian street — was arguably one of the most hated individuals by the millions of Egyptians who took to the streets against Morsi and the Brotherhood.

In a live interview on Tahrir TV, political insider and former Egyptian Member of Parliament Mustafa Bakari exposed the relationship between Patterson and Khairat al-Shater, the deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.  He said she was regularly seen going to and from the Brotherhood leader’s private residence, as opposed to meeting at the party’s headquarters. He said she told al-Shater “we [the U.S.] will stand with you [regarding the June 30 protests],” and that she treated the Brotherhood leader as the “true ruler of the nation.” Bakari concluded by saying:

[I]n fact, in my opinion, she is a member of the sleeper cells of the Brotherhood, likely recruited by Essam al-Erian or Muhammad al-Baltagi.

Soon after the revolution, she repeatedly tried to reinstate the Brotherhood to power.  Even Muhammad Heikal — “the Arab world’s most respected political commentator,” and for over 50 years an Egyptian political insider — said during a live interview that Patterson had assured the Muslim Brotherhood’s Hisham Qandil, who under Morsi was Egypt’s prime minister, that “there are many forms of pressure, and America holds the keys to the Gulf.”

Later, Patterson demanded that Egypt’s recently appointed supreme commander of the Egyptian Armed Forces, General Abdul Fatah al-Sisi, release all Muslim Brotherhood members currently being held for questioning:

And when Sisi rejected this order, the American ambassador began threatening him that Egypt will turn into another Syria and live through a civil war.

Another report said Patterson was “trying to communicate with General Sisi, demanding dialogue with the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, and concessions to them,” to which Sisi reportedly retorted:

Stop meddling in our affairs … the Egyptian people are capable of looking after their own welfare.

Because of all this, several of Egypt’s revolutionary forces, including Tamarod, which played a pivotal role in the June 30 Revolution, staged protests in front of the U.S. embassy in Cairo “calling for the ejection of ambassador Anne Patterson.”

In connection, Egyptian journalist Abdullah al-Sanawi said this on live TV:

Anne Patterson’s presence in Egypt has become a great burden for America, and Patterson should be admitted into a mental hospital for her deeds are full of bloodshed and the Obama administration is in a very awkward position in front of the whole world, the [U.S.] Congress and the Pentagon.

Read it all.

Add this to Trump’s pick for Labor Secretary believed to have a cozy relationship with Islamic groups  and a new National Security Advisor who claims ISIS is not Islamic and that we should not use the term “Islamic terror,” it’s beginning to look like the more things change, the more they stay the same. And that can only be good news for Muslims, but bad for everyone else.

  1. THIS is why we needed General Flynn so badly, and WHY the left made sure he couldn’t stay in. It’s an uphill battle for our Freedom/Liberty!

    • @ Linda M Clark – Yeah the loss of Michael Flynn was tragic; a great loss for truth! The appointment of McMasters was horrible & stands against everything Trump ran on.

Mattis is a great General & a awesome Sec’y of Defense, this nomination by him is unbelievable, & so wrong. Trump has to stand strong against this nomination. This nomination is against everything Trump ran on.
I simply can’t believe Mattis did this.

      • I cant say I’m surprised, there is something about Mattis I cant pinpoint just a gut feeling on some of the things I’ve heard about him. Why not just put one of the Hoods in that position I see no difference.

      • Agreed that this potential appointment is poor, her ties to barry should be MORE than enough to disqualify her. Period. Trump needs to get rid of any and all who still harbor any degree of ‘loyalty’ to obama over the Republic.

  2. Jim Mattis is a great General, an awesome Sec’y of Defense, plus he is extremely knowledgeable, I am shocked he nominated Anne Patterson, Mattis is better than this!
We need to pray that Mattis will come to his senses & with draw this nomination … NOW!
This pick is a tragic mistake on Mattis’ part.
And shows he is human & flawed like anyone.

  3. This is what the American envoys and ambassadors do everywhere. Deborah Jones did the same in Libya and it’s on the verge of becoming Syria.

The democratically elected (and Egyptian backed) secularists were brought to their knees by the U.S. And UN (which has a libya mission operated by Palestinians who were installed by the U.S.). They demanded concessions and meetings with the terrorist Islamists. British “Envoy” Powell expanded his book “Talking with Terrorists”/self-promotion tour into libya and explained the virtues of compromising with people who refuse to compromise. Of course, Mr Powell compares the IRA with Moslems. The comparison is null and void as there’s never been a jihadi IRA SUICIDE BOMBER or a IRA fighter who strapped an IED onto his 4 year old girl children and sent them into a police children to self detonate. Alas, the EU/UN and U.S. liberals insists upon empowering the Islamists and no matter how many military gains occur on the ground in Libya or Syria on behalf of Assad or the Libyan Secularists in the East — the U.S./UN come in and force through a reshuffling of the cards so that the jihadis come out on top. You cannot make this stuff up.

If you’re wondering what’s behind all this, two things:
    1) Palestinians, brainwashed and weaponized since birth, and now at the helm
    2) the diplomats have their hands in the cookie jar and are more interested in getting lucrative oil deals or positions Atlantic Council, Legatum, EUCFR, etc that they are willing to destroy the world for a few thousand dollars.

If sharia law continues spreading, you'll have less and less freedom of speech - so speak while you can!
