US Special Ops apologizes to Muslims for ‘highly offensive’ leaflet dropped in Afghanistan

Yesterday, the US Forces – Afghanistan issued a cryptic press release apologizing for an “image highly offensive to both Muslims and the religion of Islam” that was part of a leaflet dropped in Parwan province. While the press release never addressed the specific contents of the image, Taliban media personnel posted it on their twitter feeds.

[Did you catch that? The Taliban are permitted on Twitter…while those who expose jihadists are banned.]

The image (reproduced above) features a lion chasing what appears to be a dog or a goat with the shahada (the profession of faith in Islam: “there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”) emblazoned over it. The Taliban uses the shahada on a white background as its flag. Presumably, the lion represents the Afghan government/military, while the dog/goat represents the Taliban.

A public affairs or information operations specialist made the grave error of equating the shahada solely with the Taliban, and the commanding general of Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan is now forced to apologize for the mistake.

Predictably, the Taliban quickly capitalized on the US information operations blunder and launched a suicide attack outside of Bagram Air Base. The Taliban claimed the attack and said it was executed to avenge the perceived insult on Islam. The Taliban claimed more than 20 people, including US personnel, were killed at the gate outside of Bagram. US Forces -Afghanistan confirmed the attack and said “the explosion resulted in a small number of casualties.”

The Taliban, without a doubt, will claim more attacks to avenge the perceived slight.

The Taliban has deftly used its propaganda to make itself appear to be the defenders of the Muslim faith. This is a serious issue and a major component of the war that should not be taken lightly. The Taliban, like other jihadist groups such as al Qaeda, derives its legitimacy in the Muslim world by enmeshing itself in Islam. Religious leaders and the fatwas, or religious edicts, that they issue are just as important, if not more so, than the military commanders and their operations.

Press release attributed to Major General James Linder, the commanding general of Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan:

On September 5, U.S. forces conducted a leaflet drop in Parwan Province. The design of the leaflets mistakenly contained an image highly offensive to both Muslims and the religion of Islam.

I sincerely apologize. We have the deepest respect for Islam and our Muslim partners worldwide.

There is no excuse for this mistake. I am reviewing our procedures to determine the cause of this incident and to hold the responsible party accountable. Furthermore, I will make appropriate changes so this never happens again.

Resolute Support remains committed to Afghanistan’s future, and I offer my sincerest apologies for this error.”

U.S. Special Operations “have the deepest respect for Islam”? Why? Did they respect Nazism? Communism? Did they ever have to make such a proclamation?

Special Ops is “committed to Afghanistan’s future”? Didn’t Trump announce the end of nation building in Afghanistan just a few weeks ago? The U.S. military should be committed to the future of one nation, the U.S.

The war in Afghanistan has been an epic failure. It’s well past time to end it. Bring the troops home. Ban all travel from Afghanistan and of Afghanis to the U.S. Cut all funds to Afghanistan. Pakistan has always harbored the bigger threat anyway.

  1. Too late; they apologized after 20 people were dead. The Taliban and ISIS re. all their affiliates dont need any provocation to do anything. They just are unable to tolerate people period.

    • You know what Christine… I don’t think I believe this, you know? Some of this stuff I believe is bogus. Don’t you? I mean, why would we be apologizing for anything? Right? I’d have to really check out the facts behain this.. but I’m too busy. My take on it is that we can’t always believe what we read.

      • Sally, I believe it for sure. Dont forget they are in Afghanistan and they still have a diplomatic role and have somehow to keep good rapport between countries. It’s true that we should not believe everything we read. Generally, I verify all information. For this one I did not .

    • You heard wrong. Why would the Jesuits invent something that slants towards the more Jewish rites in the Old Testament and also pagan rites. As for a link – one would have to show a legitimate link instead of the usual protestant hate fest against anything/everything Catholic.

The Jesuits know what the Trinity is and it isn’t allah a liar ‘god’ that hates, nor is it a blasphemous Isa and Isa’s mother! But there were many heretical cults during the time that islam was thought up. It has been too easy for protestants to hate and I would say that isn’t very ‘Christian’ of them based on their lack of knowledge and/or just following what a preacher says that just follows the ‘hate Catholics’ agenda.

    • Here is a better link that actually goes into the history of Mohamed.

And this is being given by a protestant who isn’t in a ‘hate fest’ with Catholics. (people judge not on the religion of Catholicism but by some bad people – if this is how we do things then if we judged protestant religions by that same rule – then the protestants would wail and whine… just like the moslems do when they are feigning their victimhood!)

  2. Our government should not only be dropping more leaflets like this but others that discredit this disgusting ideology of sexual perversion (that is rife in Afghanistan and elsewhere) and hate and intolerance! They should be ashamed of themselves for apologizing!

If sharia law continues spreading, you'll have less and less freedom of speech - so speak while you can!
