A Christian man has been sentenced to death on blasphemy charges by a court in eastern Pakistan after a close friend accused him of sharing anti-Islamic material, the defendant’s lawyer said.

Blasphemy is a criminal offence in Muslim-majority Pakistan, and insults against the Prophet Mohammad are punishable by death. Most cases are filed against members of minority communities.

Nadeem James, 35, was arrested in July 2016, accused by a friend of sharing material ridiculing the Prophet Mohammad on the WhatsApp messaging service.

Lawyer Riaz Anjum said his client intended to appeal against the verdict, passed on Thursday by a sessions court in the town of Gujrat.

There was widespread outrage across Pakistan last April when student Mashal Khan was beaten to death at his university in Mardan following a dormitory debate about religion.

Police arrested more than 20 students and some faculty members in connection with the killing.

Since then, parliament has considered adding safeguards to the blasphemy laws, a groundbreaking move given the emotive nature of the issue.

While not a single convict has ever been executed for blasphemy in Pakistan, there are currently about 40 people are on death row or serving life sentences for the crime, according to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

Right-wing vigilantes and mobs have taken the law into their own hands, killing at least 69 people over alleged blasphemy since 1990, according to an Al Jazeera tally.

In March, Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered the immediate removal and blocking of all online content deemed to be “blasphemous” to Islam from social media – and for those responsible to be prosecuted.

Nadeem James was charged in July last year after his Muslim friend Yasir Bashir complained to police that he received a poem on the messaging app that was derogatory towards the Prophet Mohammed and other holy figures.

“James was handed a death sentence by the court on Thursday on blasphemy charges,” defence lawyer Anjum Wakeel said.

“My client will appeal the sentence in the high court as he has been framed by his friend, who was annoyed over James’ affair with a Muslim girl,” Mr Wakeel said.

He said the trial was held inside a prison due to security reasons after local Muslim clerics had threatened James and his family. Court officials confirmed the sentence.

  1. You’d think with these horrible sentences for something people in the US talking disrespect towards our president take advantage of our laws would quit trying to ignore what these minions are protesting for to rid our freedoms & have no idea what they ate stirring up with all these islamics invading our country & doing everything they can to manipulate our laws! What is wrong with these people? They are going to destroy our country & that’s exactly what these Islamic cults are waiting for!

  2. While they, Muslims, are allowed to remain in non Muslim countries, every one of them who comitts a crime of a sexual nature should be executed. Islam is not compatible with civilization. It should be erased from the Earth.

  3. If anyone in the U.S. thinks these followers of the Islamic cult of “prace” won’t pull this crap here, THINK AGAIN! It’s already started in Dearborn, MI when a Christian pastor was told burning a Koran was blasphemous! I bet these savages can burn a Holy Bible, as a sign of religious freedom, but we better not criticize them. Ban this barbaric cult of hate, deport Muslims, close(or burn down!)all mosques schools and Islamic centers. To paraphrase an old joke: What do you call 10,000 Muslims at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean? A good Start! Get rid of these inbred mongrels now!

  4. Why are a bunch of religious fanatics called right wing? When we see secular lunatics selling their homosexual, transexual, gender blender, gender fluid agendas is that right wing? Is it any less a fanatic religious belief? Any less than BLM?

Non tolerance of opposing ideas is the hallmark of the left. Orwell was certainly writing about Communism and not the tenets of Jefferson.

    • Bill, you are absolutely correct! Hillary actually thought 1984 was written as a guide as to why, big government is a good idea! She completely missed the point Orwell was making. Completely deluded!

  5. Not only will he be tried for blasphemy but also for allegedly dating a Muslim woman, and these “peaceful” Islamists will hunt down the woman, or just pick one out, and bring charges against her for dating a kaffir (i.e. non-Muslim), I think that maybe punishable by stoning to death. All cultures are not equal, some really are better than others.

If sharia law continues spreading, you'll have less and less freedom of speech - so speak while you can!
