An 18-year-old man is accused of blackmailing a 13-year-old girl into sending him a nude photo of her over Snapchat, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
Hadi Cherri of Dearborn was formally charged March 26 in 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores with accosting a child for immoral purpose, communicating with another person over the internet to commit a crime, extortion and using a computer to commit a crime. The computer and extortion offenses each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, sheriff’s officials said.
St. Clair Shores police initially learned that the girl met Cherri over social media, and Cherri convinced her to send him a nude photo over Snapchat, an internet “app,” claiming he already had an unclothed photo of her that he would publish if she didn’t comply, officials said. The girl sent the photo, and Cherri then demanded more photos and began to threaten her, officials said.
Investigators from the Macomb Area Computer Enforcement team through search warrants submitted to multiple companies identified Cherri as the culprit, officials said.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham reminded young people they should get help if they feel pressured or suspect wrongdoing.
“I urge young people who feel pressured or suspicious to go to a parent or trusted adult,” Wickersham said. “I encourage parents to talk with their children about the dangers of the internet, specifically speaking with people they do not know on a personal level. Know what your children are doing online, what apps they are using and who they are communicating with. It’s not an invasion of privacy, it’s a matter of keeping your children safe.”
Cherri was released after posting 10 percent of a $150,000 bond, according to the county jail web site. He was ordered to wear a tether within 24 hours of his release.
Cherri is scheduled to return to court April 6.
